Welcome to Our Full-Circle Future

With an estimated 101 million tons of textile waste generated worldwide every year, designing for beauty and longevity is no longer enough, and recycled materials can only get us so far. It’s time to come full circle. That’s why we’ve partnered with Worry Free Plastics. By adding their breakthrough enzymatic technology into TerraStrand yarns, our textiles can convert into nutrient-rich soil. The result: Products that are not only easy to live with, clean, reuse, and refurbish but also able to regenerate natural systems.

Worry-Free Plastics FAQ

How does this affect Chilewich’s commitment to original design and American craftsmanship?

Our partnership with Worry Free Plastics expands our focus on originality and longevity to encompass circular design: a holistic approach to product and systems development that aims to eliminate waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use for as long as possible, and regenerate natural systems. The technology is embedded within our TerraStrand yarns, with no change to the look, feel, or performance of the products we make with these yarns. The uncompromising American craftsmanship of our products remains the same.

Does this affect the durability or lifespan of Chilewich products?

No. Products enhanced by Worry Free Plastics technology offer the quality and performance you have come to expect from Chilewich, including a long life that can span decades of daily use, indoors or outdoors. The technology remains dormant during normal use and only activates if the product is in an end-of-life environment such as a landfill or industrial composting facility.

Can I still easily clean my Chilewich products?

Yes. The technology does not affect the easy maintenance of our products. Keeping them in peak condition is as easy as ever. They can be washed with soap and water, helping to reduce the energy and costs associated with laundering while maintaining a sleek, elegant look. Our products also remain bleach cleanable. You can find more information about caring for and maintaining your products here.

Will Chilewich products start to degrade if left outdoors?

No. Worry Free Plastics technology only activates when exposed to specific anaerobic (oxygen-deprived) end-of-life conditions, namely landfills. Moisture, sunlight, dirt, and other normal outdoor conditions do not act as triggers. Your products will maintain their strength and beauty outdoors for decades.

Are the products still resistant to mold and mildew?

Yes. Our woven and tufted products are strengthened at the polymer level by Microban® antimicrobial protection, which works continuously for the usable life of the product to inhibit the growth of stain- and odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Is this technology safe for my home, workspace, and/or vehicle?

Yes. The organic enzyme remains completely inert during normal use, is non-toxic, and only activates in specific end-of-life environments like landfills.

Which products have Worry Free Plastics technology?

Beginning in September 2025, TerraStrand yarns will incorporate this technology. You'll see the Chilewich + Worry Free Plastics certification mark begin to appear on labeling as these yarns are made into products across our complete collection. Any products not made with TerraStrand yarns will not incorporate the technology: specifically, pressed placemats (Bloom, Dahlia, Daisy, and Petal) and Hachiman products.

How has this been tested to make sure it works?

In addition to passing our own testing, the technology of Worry Free Plastics has been evaluated by independent (third-party) organizations to ensure it meets the following ASTM (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials) standards, which are used and accepted worldwide:

  • Landfill ASTM D5511: Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under High Solids, and Anaerobic Digestion Conditions (equivalent to ISO 15985, EN 15985)
  • Landfill ASTM D5526: Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastics Under Accelerated Landfill Conditions
  • Commercial Compost ASTM D5338: Standard Test Method for Determining Aerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under Controlled Composting Conditions, Incorporating Thermophilic Temperatures
  • Soil ASTM D5988: Standard Test Method for Determining Aerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials in Soil
  • Marine/Sea Water ASTM D6691: Standard Test Method for Determining Aerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials in the Marine Environment by a Defined Microbial Consortium or Natural Sea Water Inoculum
